Technology needed for the Internet

There are many ways to access the internet. It is important to find an internet provider that suits your needs. There are many companies such as Xfinity (Comcast), Google Fiber, CenturyLink, etc. Once you find your provider look for then you can start looking at ways to hook up the internet. You need a modem. A modem allows you to connect to the internet, and a router allows you to have multiple devices hooked up to the internet. You cannot use the internet without a modem, and you can't use a router without the modem.

Once you have the basics figured out it's important to look into browsers, as well as search engines. Browsers are what allow you to search the internet, and search engines, are websites on the internet, that allow you to search information through them. Browsers include Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. Search engines are websites like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.

Web browsers and search engines do not store information long term. It is now possible to store information in what is called "the cloud." This is a form of a website that allows you to store personal items on it such as music, photos, documents etc. It takes away the need for things like CD's, Floppy disks, USB drives, external hard drives, etc.

The best way to access health information will be to use a web browser of your choice, which then leads to a search engine. Once to the search engine you should be able to type in the web address that will lead you to your health information. Technology is a big part of this world now, so it's important to learn the basics. Especially when it relates to your health.

Personal Health Records

Technology has made life easier in the way that everything is easier to access. It is important that everyone is able to get to their own healthcare information. Many doctors offices and hospitals have switched over to Electronic Health Records. Many places with these also have a personal health record you can access. Intermountain Healthcare has My Health. My health allows you to view previous lab results, vital signs, vaccine records etc. You can also see doctors notes on the results. You can find the nearest doctors, schedule visits, and many other things.

Websites that have personal information, like medical, the will always be password protected, they have a username as well. The only person who can access the information are those with the username and password. If you give these names out to someone, you are giving them the okay to view your personal health information. If you don't want people to know, don't give out the info.
I personally enjoy being able to access my own health information without having to contact the doctors. Although you may have concerns with privacy issues, it might be worth it to look into.

Virtual Support Groups

Support groups are useful because it allows you to interact with a group of people that are struggling with the same things as you are. Virtual support groups allow you to interact with more people, from all around the world. These types of groups don't let location stop you from interacting.
The best way to keep confidentiality is to ask everyone to keep what happens in the group, in the group. It's important to think that you wouldn't want that information shared if it were about yourself, so you shouldn't share others information.
Some support groups that I recommend are:

  • Facebook- All you have to do is search for what you are looking for, and a group will appear. This is a broad group, but it is one of the main ways people communicate with each other worldwide.
  • Careliving Community-http://careliving.stroke.org/ This support group is to help those who were diagnosed with a stroke, or have had a family member diagnosed. Strokes can be a major change to someones life, and it's important that they can talk through it with others who have been affected by it.
  • Diabetes Daily-https://www.diabetesdaily.com/ Being diagnosed with diabetes is a huge life changer. Diabetes daily gives pointers, as well as creates a safe online environment to talk about the lifestyle change. There are many blog posts about things related to diabetes.
  • DBSA- https://secure2.convio.net/dabsa/site/SPageServer/?pagename=home This is a depression and bipolar support alliance group. This is important because it allows people with depression and bipolar to come together and talk about their struggles with mental health.

Medical Apps

There are many useful apps that are on a smart phone. The apps I personally use are more for activity reminders, and in case of emergencies. There are also apps that can send notifications to remind someone to take their medications, check blood glucose, blood pressure, etc. The apps I will be listing will be available through google play, and possibly through the app store for Iphones.

Image result for mango health appThe first app I found is called Mango Health. It allows you to plug in your medication schedule, and will send out reminders to take them. This app also allows you to record your blood pressure, blood glucose, weight, water intake, activity level, and mood. It will also remind you to eat better. This app is helpful if you just forget to take your medications, or just need little reminders sent to you. You can decide how much information you are willing to give it. When looking to get an app, it's important to realize that they will need personal information to make it more personalized. More information can be found on https://www.mangohealth.com/.

Image result for medical id appMedical ID is an app used in case of an emergency. This app does require you to give it quite a bit of access, but all make sense for what the app does. This app wants you to put in personal details. The information that it asks for are name, weight, height, blood type, allergies, medical issues, and any other information. This app allows the information to be accessed from the lock screen by double tapping on the notification, in the case of an emergency.  More information can be found at https://medicalid.app/.

Image result for samsung health appSamsung Health is very similar to Mango Health, but comes with Samsung specific phones. Once the app is set up it can track many things. It will track your activity level, the amount of sleep you get, weight, heart rate, stress level, calorie intake, etc. It keeps track of the calories burned as well. The more information you plug in, the more accurate the app will be. More information can be found at https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-health/.

Image result for sleep cycle appOne app I use often is called Sleep Cycle. I really like this app because you can punch in the time of day you need to wake up, and it gives you a half hour window of when the alarm will go off. It listens to the noises you make at night, to detect where you are at in your sleep cycle. It tries to wake you up when you are at the end of each cycle, and will feel the most refreshed. It bases your information off of data it collects through sound. More information on this app can be found at https://www.sleepcycle.com/.

Helpful Websites

There are many websites that give accurate medical information. Some of the websites that I like to go to for reliable information are listed below. These websites are not listed in any specific order.

http://www.diabetes.org/- This website has great info on both types of diabetes. It also provides knowledge on how to change the way you live. Diabetes.org was created by many people who have been around diabetes. This includes those who have it, have a loved one who has it, or people medically tied to diabetes. Each of these types of people have different stories, and skills that relate back to diabetes.

https://www.heart.org/ explains ways to improve the way you live, such as losing weight, diet, mental health, and exercise. It also gives details on diseases' related to the heart. This is a great resource when you have questions related to heart health.

http://www.strokeassociation.org/STROKEORG/ This website gives reliable information on strokes. It goes into detail with what causes strokes, and ways to reduce the risk of stroke to prevent it from happening again.

https://emedicine.medscape.com/ is different from the other websites above. This website is full of general medical information. It has details related to all kinds of sickness' and diseases. It also has information on different types of drugs. This includes side effects, and reasons not to take them. This website is very user friendly, and allows you to look up symptoms to see what you could possibly have. The information is more reliable than WebMD.

https://www.cdc.gov/ is very similar to medscape in the fact it is used more for general information. The CDC is somewhere to go if there are any questions related to diseases that are easily given to one another. The website has specific details on all known sicknesses, and outbreaks. It also talks about the ones that need to be reported state wide and nationally. The CDC monitors outbreaks of illness, as well as treatment and research.

Each of these websites are helpful when trying to find medical information. Each one has positives and negatives. Find the one you like the most, and stick with it.
